IT must stink to be one of the people actually working for Diane von Furstenberg. Though reality starlet Whitney Port will be seen toiling for the designer on her new MTV spin-off series, “The City,” which premieres tonight, one source tells us, “She doesn’t really work. She is hardly ever in the office.” Those who do work for von Furstenberg, however, are in the office daily and “can’t get their work done because MTV tells them they can’t move any thing at their work stations. They do so many reshoots that everything has to look exactly the same every day.”

Whitney Port’s The Hills spin-off, The City (which documents her new life in New York City — that title couldn’t possibly be more clever, right?) premieres tonight on MTV, and the celebutante stopped by the EW offices to give us the dirt on going from sideline player to star of her own series. (Hint: she promises she hasn’t left her token I’m totally saying something without saying anything at all facial expressions behind.)

Plus, the statuesque blonde (she really is tall in person) also offered up some juicy details on a few things I was dying to know regarding the “reality” behind The Hills. Besides her “meet cute” with Jay, I also asked Whitney about the it-was-so-absurd-it-just-had-to-be-faked curling iron incident in Paris during season 3. Remember how Lauren accidentally burned the super pricey Alberta Ferretti gown she was supposed to wear to the Crillon Ball, and then the store magically handed over another one to her, seemingly with no questions asked? Well, according to Whit, the bad deed did not go unpunished [dun dun dun].

Looks like viewers weren’t ready to move from The Hills to The City.

Only 1.6 million people tuned into the Hills spinoff’s premiere Monday night, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show, which aired during a holiday week, follows Whitney Port’s move from L.A. to NYC.

The premiere of The Hills was down as well; only 2.6 million viewers watched the Dec. 22 Season 4 finale — down from 3.8 million who watched the Season 3 finale in May.

When Alex resurfaces in Whitney’s life he brings a whole lot of drama with him. After Alex and Jay almost get into a fight at a club Whitney is left not knowing who to trust.

Whitney starts her now job at Diane von Furstenberg. Her first week promises to be a busy one considering it’s Fashion Week, but she’s still able to make time for fun: a date with Jay and a dinner party at Olivia’s.
